02.10.10 New photo: Samael, the Angel of Death

February 17, 2010, Los Angeles: Photographer Seamus R. Ryan has released a new image, entitled Samael, the Angel of Death. According to Talmudic lore, the archangel Samael was the angel of death and a character regarded as both good and evil.

“This image was inspired by Arnold Bocklin's painting Odysseus and Calypso,” says Ryan. “That painting gave me an image in my mind of Death on the beach, gazing out to sea. I also plan on doing a rendition of Odysseus and Calypso in the future, in addition to other shots featuring Samael. He is a very intriguing character, and I look forward to illustrating his adventures.”

Ryan's image was stitched together from eight different photographs taken by the artist. Limited-edition prints on canvas are available by request while supplies last. Each gicleé print is printed on a 1.5 inch thick varnished and gallery-wrapped canvas, hand-signed and numbered by Seamus Ryan.

20”x37” print, from a limited edition of 50: $280 plus $40 shipping and handling

10”x18” print, from a limited edition of 100: $70 plus $10 shipping and handling

02.02.10 “The World Tree” featured in iCreate magazine

The World Tree” was featured prominently on page 12 of the latest issue (#76) of iCreate magazine, found in newsstands and bookstores in the U.S. and U.K. The page in question can be viewed here. Below is the text that accompanied the image:

We were very impressed with Seamus Ryan's image, entitled The World Tree, this month. Created in Photoshop, Seamus gathered 12 photos taken on his Canon EOS 20D camera and blended them to produce the remarkable image above. The image was inspired by Norse mythology, in which it was thought that the world was structured around a giant tree. "It's important for me for there to be a story behind the images I create," says Seamus. "The deeper the literary roots, the better. The World tree is a theme that I plan on developing further in future images as well."

01.12.10 New photo: The Birth of Venus II

January 12, 2010, Los Angeles: Seamus R. Ryan has released “The Birth of Venus II,” his second depiction of this classical myth in the medium of photography, and the latest addition to his ongoing “Birth of Venus” series. The photo illustrates the birth of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, as described in mythological sources, notably Ovid’s “Metamorphoses.”

“I’m better versed in painting and art history than I am in contemporary photography,” says Ryan. “I suppose this shows in my work. My images tell stories, and illustrate myths and ideas. For me, every decent work of art has a story behind it.”

Ryan was inspired to illustrate The Birth of Venus when he first beheld Sandro Botticelli’s painting of the same name while studying abroad in Italy during his college years.

“I saw Botticelli’s Venus in Florence when I was studying abroad in Italy in 2003. I felt like Venus was looking at me from that painting; the painting seemed alive, as if it had a spirit. It was like making eye contact with divinity. And yet, when I see copies of the painting, Venus is always looking away.”

“When I first beheld that painting I knew that I had to re-create it photographically,” Ryan continues. “Right now, I enjoy the creative freedom of rendering my own versions of the story, but I do plan on making a piece-by-piece photographic re-creation of Botticelli's Venus later this year, after I get my own Venus series rolling a bit.”

11.06.09 Seamus R. Ryan unveils “The Birth of Venus.”

November 6, 2009, Los Angeles: Photographer Seamus R. Ryan has unveiled “The Birth of Venus,” which marks the first depiction of this classical myth in the medium of photography. The photo illustrates the birth of Aphrodite, a.k.a. Venus, the goddess of love, as described in Greek and Roman mythological sources. This scene has been depicted by numerous painters throughout history, from times of antiquity to the Renaissance. Among those artists are Apelles, Botticelli, Titian, Cabanel, and Bouguereau. However, Seamus Ryan’s image marks the first time this story has been illustrated in the medium of photography. The image is thus without precedent in photographic history. By bringing mythology into the photography world, Seamus Ryan has secured his niche as a photographer and brought art history to a new generation.

“The Birth of Venus” heralds what will doubtless be a resurgent theme in the art world: namely, the re-emergence of classical and Renaissance themes in 21st century digital art. Limited-edition canvas prints are available by request while supplies last.

10.22.09 “The World Tree” prints now available

October 22nd, 2009, Los Angeles: Seamus R. Ryan, photographer and digital artist, has unveiled “The World Tree,” a new gicleé print on canvas available for purchase by art collectors.
The image was inspired by Norse mythology, in which the world was thought to have been structured around a gigantic tree. The two ravens pictured in the image continue the work’s mythological theme, as they represent Huginn and Muninn, the messenger birds of the king of the Norse gods according to Viking sagas. The image is photorealistic, a collage of multiple photos captured by Seamus Ryan, and yet is also fantastical and otherworldly.

Each print measures 20 inches by 37 inches, and is hand-signed and numbered by the artist. The edition is limited to 150 prints. Framed copies sell for $700, and unframed gallery-wrapped copies sell for $350. Each print is gicleé on canvas with a museum-quality varnish coating.

ABOUT

Welcome to my site. I am a photographer, writer, and graphic designer, and a full-service creative professional and digital artist. My primary focus in life is to create memorable works of art in a variety of media.

As a photographer, I revitalize classical themes by infusing them with digital life. The symbols and archetypes in my work have deep roots, yet are made current through their contemporary medium. I was a finalist in Photographer's Forum's annual photography contest in 2005 and 2009, and my work has been exhibited and published. I was also awarded the Camille Claudel Award for Artistic Excellence in 2003. I was taught Adobe Photoshop by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak when I was 11 years old, and I am now the best photo retoucher that I know. I am available for freelance work in the fields of editorial, advertising, fashion, music, and fine art photography, and I am currently seeking representation.

As a graphic designer, I have worked for King Baby Studio, Rebel Roots, Industry Art Works, Coldwell Banker, and Re/Max. I remain available for freelance work as a graphic designer, photographer, and writer.

I grew up in the scenic Santa Cruz Mountains and spent much of my youth wandering the wilderness and creating simple games on my computer. I graduated from Pitzer College, one of the Claremont Colleges, in May of 2004, as a double major in Art and World Literature, with respective emphases in Photography and Creative Writing. I also spent a semester studying abroad in Modena, Italy. I am currently based in the coastal Los Angeles area.
